There is a certain irony in being a mobile mechanic that never gets old. Usually, I’m in a quiet driveway in Covington or a shaded spot in Mandeville, but every now and then, the job takes me somewhere with a bit more… energy.

While dozens of people were inside pushing through their morning sets and hitting the treadmills, I was out in the parking lot getting a workout of my own. My "gym equipment" for the morning? A 2017 Ford Fusion and the mechanical enigma known as a stretch belt.

The Technical Puzzle: What is a Stretch Belt?
Now, let’s talk shop for a second. Most modern cars use a serpentine belt with an automatic tensioner. It’s a spring-loaded pulley that keeps the belt tight. You just rotate the tensioner, slip the belt on, and you’re done.
The 2017 Ford Fusion, however, uses what’s called a stretch belt for the AC compressor.
As the name implies, these belts don't have a tensioner. They are designed to be slightly smaller than the distance they need to cover, and they literally have to be "stretched" over the pulleys. It sounds simple in theory, but in practice, it’s a high-stakes game of mechanical yoga.
Why Stretch Belts Can Be a Headache
When you’re working in a public parking lot, you don't have the luxury of a hydraulic lift. You’re working on the ground, navigating tight engine bays with the sun beating down on the asphalt. The Ford Fusion doesn't give you much "elbow room," especially when you’re trying to reach the crankshaft and the compressor at the same time.
Here is why these belts are a specific kind of challenge:
- No Slack: There is zero "give." You can't just slide it on.
- Precision is Key: If you don't align the grooves perfectly as you "walk" the belt onto the pulley, you can damage the belt or even the pulley itself.
- Specialty Tools: You can't do this job with a standard wrench set. You need a specialized belt installation tool that helps guide the belt as you manually rotate the engine.

To get this belt on, I had to remove the front passenger wheel and the splash guard to get a clear shot at the crankshaft. This is where the physical part comes in.
With the installation tool locked onto the pulley, I had to use a 21mm socket and a long-handle ratchet to rotate the entire engine by hand. As the engine turns, you have to carefully guide the belt so it "climbs" onto the pulley. It takes a surprising amount of force: definitely enough to count as my lifting for the day!
Doing this in a Planet Fitness parking lot was a bit of a spectacle. I had people walking out with their protein shakes, watching me wrestle with a ratchet under a Ford Fusion. One guy even joked that I was getting a better pump than the people on the bench press. I can't say I disagree!
